'Feet First'
In August 2009, an arsonist started a fire that burned more than 160,000 acres in the mountains around Los Angeles County. The mountains have long been home to pockets of residents, but in recent decades neighbourhoods have boomed with large housing developments. Some residents in the fire zone knew and accepted the risks of living there, but many had no idea they were living so near to danger.
Many residents simply won't give up on their properties and the lifestyle they symbolise. Eve Troeh follows families who evacuate and still return, and the fight they have with public officials who want to shut the neighbourhood down.

'Wedge Island'
North of Perth, Western Australia - on a rugged and secluded stretch of coastline - is a settlement time forgot. Its shacks are makeshift creations fashioned out of corrugated iron with no electricity or running water. It's a holiday in the finest Australian beach shack tradition.
But it could all be about to end. Officially, the residents of Wedge Island are squatters. Twenty years ago the government introduced its Squatter Removal Policy, slowly working its way down the coast demolishing more than 600 shacks. Wedge Island is next in line. But the shackies are shaping up for the fight of their lives.

Africa needs more nurses. That's Dorothy Ngombe's message at home and abroad. An experienced nurse and midwife herself, she's been looking for ways to keep the qualified nurses the continent needs at home.
Dorothy Ngombe feels that African countries should not just train nurses to go and work abroad.

Dear RNW,
I love most of your programming. Unfortunately, you are only hearing from me when I have a complaint. I will try to be more complementary in the future.
What happened to the RNW player? Before the format change I could choose broadcasts on demand of other programs and listen to them during my morning routine between 5 and 7 a.m. Now I'm forced to listen to whatever happens to be on at the time. And listening to one story at a time on demand is not an option as it requires constant monitoring and clicking after each story. I am an American living in Amsterdam since July of last year. Due to poor eyesight, I have a difficulty reading and I don't speak Dutch yet, so I mostly depend on broadcast media for information. RNW Newsline and Curious Orange are the ONLY ones I've found. Too bad. Surely there is money to be made here, but that's another topic. Could you please return the feature to the RNW player to select other programs? And since you might be looking to change the new format anyway, please change the contrast levels, too. It's very hard for me to see anything other than the "now playing" box.
Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
April Laine Oostwal
p.s. Please excuse the duplicate posts, as I plan to send this to as many addresses as I can find here.
Dear Ms Oostwal,
thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have contacted our webmaster and raised the issues with him. I will keep you updated as soon as I have news. RNW Web Team
Hi, Sid.
Thank you for your reply. I notice this morning the old player is back and I'm able to get Newsline on demand. YAY! I still can't get Curious Orange, but one step at a time, I suppose. I look forward to hearing from you on the progress of improvements to the player.
Sincerely,
April Laine Oostwal
PLEASE AM USING THIS SITE TO REQUEST YOU TO SEND ME A PROGRAM GUIDES THROUGH THE POSTAL SERVICE SINCE I NORMALLY TRAVEL MORE THAT 30KM BEFORE FINDING CYBER CAFE TO COMMENT OR WRITE A MAIL.

THANK YOU AND HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON
Mr Machuki, a copy of our programme guide is in the post to you, along with a calender. Unfortunately we don't have any diaries to give away this year. Keep listening and thanks for writing. RNW Web Team
Wouldn't it be nice to have a programme Schedual here? There is no listing showing what is on NOW. What will be next. What frequencies you are on? When is the news?
I have found the "Programme schedule for 15 January 2010 - 22 January 2010." But that lists programmes but not the news. Also you have to put together the schedual yourself dodging around the programmes. Wouldn't a continuious listing be of help.
Tony
You mean like the one at http://www.rnw.nl/english/article/hour-hour-programme-guide ? :-)
